Philipp Bargfrede is back. There is no one who would not allow the well-deserved Werderaner to continue his Bundesliga career.
And yet his nomination is an alarm signal. It illustrates Werder’s disastrous transfer record.
In the summer the injury-plagued Bargfrede was denied a new contract, Patrick Erras should replace him as a back-up. But with him it’s not even enough for the bank.
Erras, Chong (long gone) and Agu were the three newcomers of the summer, of which only Agu showed sensible approaches after a good start.
Manager Baumann and scouting boss Fritz repeatedly referred to the financial hardship as if only Werder were suffering from the pandemic. The bitter truth is that other clubs work better.
Newcomers Stuttgart shows how it’s done with sports director Mislintat. One of many examples: 14-goal bargain Kalajdzic came from Mödling for only 1.75 million euros.
Werder, on the other hand, will continue to push the hammer fee (12.5 million) for bench press Davie Selke for years.
If the club wants to be competitive in the future, Baumann and Fritz also have to improve. And huge!
