VfL Wolfsburg: Because of Maxence Lacroix: VfL back with a back four?

First he watched idly, then he had to watch idly. Maxence Lacroix (22) had to leave the field after the first half (0: 5) in the Wolfsburg 1: 6 debacle. The Frenchman’s left thigh is now causing fundamental system issues at VfL.

With a back four against Mainz?

On Friday (8.30 p.m., DAZN) Wolfsburg will meet Mainz 05. It is the next Bundesliga game within a few months, which VfL characterizes as “pioneering importance”.

Under coach Florian Kohfeldt (39), a 3-4-3 was the preferred system, when the opponent has possession of the ball, the defensive row becomes a five-man chain. Without Lacroix, whose use on Friday is “questionable” according to VfL, this plan will be difficult. It is also questionable whether Lacroix (left thigh) can even play again this season.

The solution could be a return to the back four. With Sebastiaan Bornauw (23) and John-Anthony Brooks (29) in the middle, Yannick Gerhardt (28) on the left and Kevin Mbabu (turned 27 on Tuesday) on the right.

Kohfeldt’s next defense problem: The return of Micky van de Ven (21) after a thigh injury is still a long time coming. According to Kohfeldt, the Dutchman is at least “slowly on the rise”.

In the first leg (0:3) at the beginning of December, Mainz became an indicator for the coach of how difficult the task in Wolfsburg will be for him.

Kohfeldt: “Because I didn’t have the feeling that we had the right attitude towards the game. Even before that. That’s when I noticed that what characterized the team last season – above all passionate, aggressive defense – is no longer there. I knew then that we had to establish a new idea in the team. But that takes time.”

More than four months after the beating in Mainz, not much has changed in the problem identified at the time. You saw it at the actionless performance last Saturday in Dortmund.
