Pfizer to deliver 10 million doses of its anti-Covid pill to the United States

This is the second US order for oral antivirals specially designed against Covid. Pfizer announced on Thursday in a statement that the US government had ordered 10 million treatments of its anti-Covid pill for $ 5.29 billion, subject to the drug receiving the green light from health authorities. In June, Washington had already placed an order with Pfizer for 1.7 million doses of Molnupiravir, another anti-covid pill designed by the Merck laboratory.

Both treatments are under review by US health authorities. Pfizer filed an emergency authorization request for this highly anticipated treatment earlier this week. Easy to use, Paxlovid should be administered within three days of the onset of symptoms.

According to the results of clinical trials, it would reduce the risk of hospitalization by 89% in very vulnerable patients by reducing the ability of the virus to replicate. Used in addition to vaccination, oral antivirals are expected to become a key asset in the fight against Covid.
