Scroll painting by painter Truong Trach Doan (1085-1145) of Northern Song Dynasty, the layout consists of two main parts. The left half depicts the opposite scene, recreating the bustling daily life in the city. The prosperity of the Northern Song Dynasty is depicted in details such as the harbor, shops, markets… Truong Trach Doan painted about 814 people, more than 60 animals, 28 boats, more than 30 houses, 20 cars. , eight palanquins, more than 170 trees. Throughout the work is the Bien Ha river – the lifeline of traffic at that time, which played a particularly important role with the Dong Kinh citadel (now in Khai Phong city, Ha Nam province). In the period when road traffic was not developed, the transportation of goods was mainly by river. On the picture, any position can see the silhouettes of boats and porters on the river.

Busy waterways are the premise of the bustling trading scene on both sides of the river. On the streets of Dong Kinh, shops are close, buyers and sellers are buying and selling. The people of the Song Dynasty loved to drink, the big shops were called Chinh Dien and the small and medium ones were called Cuoc Dien. The artist also depicts people in fairs, thrift stores, pawn shops, kitchenware shops, lantern shops, musical instruments stores, cloth shops, picture shops, pharmacies, restaurants… People use means of transport such as horse-drawn carriages, mules, palanquins. The characters in the picture are mainly male, showing that at that time, women were limited in showing themselves.

The important point of Thanh Minh Thuong river is the bridge. According to the research of modern scholars, this section depicts the pillar of the boat that is about to hit the bridge. Above, the group crouched down to watch the sailors hastily navigate the boat.

The painting is more than 5 meters long, nearly 25 centimeters high. Each person wears different costumes, different looks and gestures, making the work as vivid as the scene in front of them. The work focuses on details, so when zoomed in, the lines are still delicate, each character is a story of its own. Thanks to the content and skillful writing style, Thanh Minh Thuong river become one of the 10 most important paintings in the history of Chinese painting.

The work was originally kept in the Northern Song court, having a thrilling fate when it has undergone dozens of changes of hands over the past 1,000 years. In 1524, the painting belonged to Luc Hoan – the chief minister of the Army. After Luc Hoan died, his wife hid the painting in a pillow. Luc Hoan’s son sold paintings to an official named Co Dinh Than, during the Ming Dynasty.

Through the hands of a few other mandarins, the work was then brought into the Ming court. But not long after, paintings were stolen by a eunuch and sold. Until the Qing Dynasty, the painting was kept in the Nghinh Xuan Pavilion in the Forbidden City, unharmed after a series of political events. Now, Thanh Minh Thuong river by Truong Trach Doan is kept in the Palace Museum, Beijing.

Many ancient painters loved and redrawn the work. There are about 30 copies available Thanh Minh Thuong river are kept in museums around the world, of which there are 10 in China, five in the US, four in France, and one in each of the UK and Japan.
