Income Tax Return (ITR): The deadline for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the assessment year 2021-22 ends on December 31, 2021. According to the Income Tax Department, 4.86 crore taxpayers have filed returns till December 28. In which only about 19 lakh taxpayers have filed income tax returns on 28 December.
According to the Income Tax Department, till January 10, 2021, 5.95 crore ITRs were filed for the financial year 2019-20. That is, if we look at the figures of last year, still more than 1 crore taxpayers are yet to file their returns. Now the question arises whether more than 1 crore income tax returns will be filed in the next three days.

Will the deadline for filing ITR be extended?
In such a situation, the question arises whether the deadline for filing income tax returns for ordinary taxpayers whose accounts do not require audit can be extended even further? However, the curtain on this is yet to be raised. But regardless of the things, you should file income tax return before 31 December 2021. The Income Tax Department is also making the same request again and again.

Penalty to be paid after December 31, 2021
Let us tell you that if you have filed the return for the assessment year 2021-22 after December 31, 2021, the deadline for filing income tax returns, then you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. And if you filed income tax return for the assessment year 2021-22 after March 31, 2022, then a penalty of Rs 10,000 will have to be paid. Therefore, if you want to avoid paying penalty, then you must file your income tax return before 31st December 2022.
