Olympia 2021: Basketball players defeat Nigeria’s “mini dream team”!

Germany’s basketball players take their first victory in Tokyo against Nigeria’s NBA selection!

After the bitter opening defeat against Italy (82:92), the DBB team is wide awake in the final phase of the second game and fights the Nigerians, previously classified as secret favorites, with 99:92.

Nigeria, a basketball midget a few years ago, defeated the US dream team for the first time (90:87) in a test match shortly before the Olympics. Eight out of twelve players were born in the USA, and eight are currently playing in the NBA. They followed the call of American head coach Michael Brown, who coached the LA Lakers and is usually assistant coach to the Golden State Warriors – with whom he became NBA champion in 2017 and 2018.

Germany starts strong, pulls away up to 22:15 in the first quarter, but cannot hold the lead for long. One thing is clear early on: It will be a competitive, physical game.

The Nigerians are gaining ground in the second section and are even ahead in the meantime. NBA star Moritz Wagner (24, Orlando Magic, 17 points) and Johannes Voigtmann (28, ZSKA Moscow, best German thrower with 19 points) ensure that the DBB team stays tuned. At halftime it is 50:50. A thriller is looming.

At the beginning of the second half, Nigeria draws up to ten points away. Led by Jordan Nwora (22 / Milwaukee Bucks), who stood out as the top scorer of the game with 33 points at the end. But the team of national coach Henrik Rödl shows morale again, equalizes shortly before the last break. Three from Voigtmann to 74:74 – and a primal scream from the German bank.

After a balanced start into the final quarter, the last five minutes are on. Right in the phase in which Germany was running out of breath against Italy, there is basketball at full throttle this time! A 14-0 run to 95:81 decides the game. Final score: 99:92.

For Nigeria it is already the second defeat, the “mini dream team” had surprisingly clearly lost their opening game against strong Australians with 67:84. Those Australians are the Germans’ last group opponent on Saturday (10:20 a.m.). With a win you could make the round of 16 perfect.
