With the onset of winter, respiratory infections, including the flu, will appear. However, their symptoms do not stand out from those of Covid at the outset, making the diagnosis of the latter more complex. This is why the diagnostic industry has developed tests that can detect several pathogens using the same PCR reaction. This is referred to as a “syndromic diagnosis”.
BioMérieux announced on Wednesday that it had obtained CE marking for a simultaneous detection test for Sars-CoV-2 and influenza A and B. “This test can be used on high throughput molecular biology platforms in hospital and city laboratories”, explains François Lacoste, director of R&D. Most of the major in vitro diagnostics, such as Thermo Fisher, Abbott or Roche, have also developed multiplex tests combining Sars-CoV-2 with other respiratory pathologies, mainly influenza.
