So far, HSV had only signed Sebastian Schonlau (26) for the new season. Now there is another reinforcement from the northern rival Holstein Kiel.
Hamburg brings Jonas Meffert (26). He still has a contract in Kiel until 2022, so the transfer fee will probably cost around 500,000 euros.
The defensive midfielder has been kicking since his move from Freiburg an der Förde in 2018. The native of Cologne made 96 compulsory games for the storks, scoring five goals.
Meffert and his Kiel team just missed promotion to the Bundesliga in the relegation against 1.FC Cologne (1-0, 1: 5). Now the right foot should create the ascent with the HSV, which starts its fourth attempt in the direction of Oberhaus.
With Meffert, the new HSV trainer Tim Walter (45) brings an old friend and companion. Under Walter, Meffert played very successfully at Holstein in the 2018/19 season. He scored three goals in 27 league appearances, finished in a respectable 6th place in the table with Kiel and Walter, and won the season opener 3-0 sensationally in the relegated team at Volkspark.
In the summer of 2019, the Kiel coach moved to VfB Stuttgart. Now the trainer and his then extended arm are coming together again in Hamburg.
Meffert fits right into Walter’s loot scheme and game philosophy. The coach plans to completely change football at HSV. The new man on the sidelines wants to play more courageously from behind and attack the opponent early and aggressively.
Only at the moment there are a few professionals missing in the HSV squad who can implement this type of football. The HSV tries to remedy this deficiency under high pressure.
First Schonlau, who was signed before the end of the season, and now Meffert, who combines these qualities wanted by Walter.
And the Kiel will certainly not be the last new one …
