Olympic dream for the stars – nightmare for Hertha?
After Brazilian Matheus Cunha (22), the next Berlin professional could start at the Olympic football tournament in Tokyo: Lucas Tousart (24) is a candidate for France’s selection.
The association already contacted Hertha about the midfielder, who is currently suffering from an adductor injury. Tousart is currently recovering with his girlfriend Blandine Laval in Ibiza.
Hertha’s record commitment (25 million euros transfer fee) would start with his national team in the Olympic competition against Mexico on July 22nd.
Exactly this schedule is the problem: Hertha’s season preparation begins at the end of June. The Olympic tournament ends with the final on August 7th, the Bundesliga starts on August 13th.
For Hertha coach Pal Dardai (45) this means: The Olympians would miss the most important part of the preparation, in which tactical basics and moves are rehearsed.
Before the last season, ex-coach Bruno Labbadia (55) also had to struggle with international trips in the middle of preparation. Result: Hertha embarrassed herself in the cup at Braunschweig (4: 5).
And other Hertha professionals are eligible to play at the Olympics: Argentine Santiago Ascacibar (24) already played for the U23 in March and could compete in Tokyo.
For Germany, Maximilian Mittelstädt (24) and Jordan Torunarigha (23) would be possible. Selection coach Stefan Kuntz (58) has not yet announced a squad.
For the professionals, a career dream would come true with the Olympics – for Hertha’s preparations, the travel professionals would be a nightmare.
