Formula 1: record world champion is lapped in Imola: Hamilton humiliated

Lewis Hamilton (37) was the dominator of Formula 1 for years! Now the seven-time world champion is becoming more and more a victim. The Mercedes driver leaves Italy badly humiliated.

Round 41: Max Verstappen (24) passes the Briton – and laps him. Hamilton has to let his world champion successor Verstappen pass without resistance. 4.959 kilometers behind with 22 laps to go.

A historic defeat for the record winner of Formula 1.

The last time Hamilton finished a race a lap behind Max Verstappen was in Mexico 2017.

Hamilton: “It was difficult. But we work as a team. And I’m glad that George (teammate Russell; ed.) scored points. I’m sorry I didn’t manage to do the same.”

AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly (26) drove long parts of the race in front of Hamilton and finished one place ahead of him in the overall standings. The Frenchman when asked what it was like to keep Hamilton behind: “I wouldn’t say easy. But it wasn’t too difficult.”

Hamilton: “I just wasn’t fast enough to overtake him.”

Team boss Toto Wolff (50): “I have to protect him in a way, it’s not his low. It’s a low in the car’s performance. He’s the best driver in the world, he just doesn’t have the car to do that right now.”

► Mick Schumacher (23) loses control of his car twice and is penultimate.

► Sebastian Vettel (34) gets his first championship points in eighth place.
