EM 2020: This is how our EM group opponents do

On June 15, the DFB-Elf starts against France in the EM. BILD am SONNTAG took a look at our group opponents before the start.

No goals, false tests and a striker dispute: this is how our EM group opponents fight!

The question before the EM is: Who can stop world champions France? Answer: especially world champion France.

In the past, the players of the Equipe Tricolore caused scandals on and off the pitch – unforgotten the 2010 World Cup strike, Zinédine Zidane’s headbutt against Marco Materazzi in the 2006 final or the sex film affair around Mathieu Valbuena 2015.

Real striker Karim Benzema (33) was also involved in it and was therefore banned from the national team.

France coach Didier Deschamps (52) brought him back to the squad for the European Championship. And there Benzema now meets another enemy – Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud (34 / Chelsea). In March 2020, Benzema said about it: “I’m Formula 1, he’s a go-kart.”

Giroud is not enthusiastic about his colleague’s comeback: “I was not asked. What should I have said then? Deschamps is the one who sets up the team. “

But he also says: “His return is good news for the French team. We now have one more offensive weapon. “

To alleviate the tension between his star strikers, Deschamps resorted to a trick: he simply sat the duo together at a dining table in the training camp.

Seems to have helped! When asked what Giroud would do in the event of a European Championship victory, the Champions League winner replied with a wink: “Then I’ll go to the kart track with Karim and we’ll take a photo.”

The defending champion starts the preparation with a zero number.

Portugal and Spain split 0-0 in Madrid. No problem for striker Rafa Silva (28 / Benfica): “We still have room to improve. And we will improve. We will have reached our best level by the start of the European Championship. We’ll be a candidate for the title we won last time. “

Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro (27) was in the starting line-up for the Portuguese. The other Bundesliga professional, André Silva (25) from Eintracht Frankfurt, sat on the bench for 90 minutes.

Portugal still have one test before they start the European Championship against Hungary on June 15 – against Israel on Wednesday. Spain will play against Lithuania on Tuesday and will have their first European Championship game against Sweden on June 14th.

First victory in the first European Championship test: Hungary beat Cyprus 1-0 (goal: Schäfer / 36th) and has now been unbeaten for ten (!) Games.

Nevertheless, the test did not go as expected – the opponent simply had the wrong tactic!

Hungary’s national coach Marco Rossi (56): “I like the result, but I didn’t like a lot in the game. We played against an opponent who defended deeply and tried to threaten us with counterattacks. That is the role that we want to take on during the EM. “

In Hungary, Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi (31) was only one of the four Bundesliga professionals in the starting eleven.

Before the first group game against Portugal on June 15, the Hungarians only test once again: on Tuesday against Ireland.
