You might have overlooked it, but Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp (IRCTC) has been providing you insurance every time you book a ticket through its website or mobile app. While booking tickets for your train journey on the IRCTC site, you will get an option on “Travel Insurance” where you can choose whether you want travel insurance or not. Since the cost is only 68 paise, it is advisable to choose this one.

Rail travel insurance provides coverage of Rs 10 lakh for death and permanent total disability arising out of any train accident or other untoward incident. 7.5 lakhs is available for permanent partial disability. 2 lakhs coverage is available for hospitalization expenses for injury. Accidents, robbery, and other violent acts during train travel are covered by the policy.

Who is eligible for IRCTC Travel Insurance
Any rail passenger who has booked an e-ticket using IRCTC website or app can buy this rail travel insurance. Flight ticket booking websites also offer similar travel insurance at the time of buying tickets, though their premium rates are higher. There is no insurance for children below five years of age during rail travel. Rail Travel Insurance Scheme is applicable only for Indian citizens. Citizens of foreign countries are not eligible for this scheme.

IRCTC has tied up with 3 insurance companies Bharti Axa General Insurance, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Shriram General Insurance for this scheme. You are buying an insurance policy from any one of these three companies and not IRCTC. Therefore, all claims should be directed towards the insurance company.

After you have booked the ticket and purchased the insurance, the policy document is sent by the insurer to your email ID. It is important to note that you have to fill the enrollment details on the website of the respective insurance company. If you do not do this then legal heirs may have to face problems in case of claim.
