Bundesliga: Hertha BSC loses derby against Union Berlin – Magath burns himself

Derby shame for Hertha!

The traditional Berlin club also loses the third city derby this season against local rivals Union. 1:4! Previously there had been a 0:2 in the first leg and a 2:3 in the DFB Cup. Instead of rearing up in the relegation battle, the next harmless appearance that is ready for the second division. Sky expert Lothar Matthäus: “This is how a relegated player plays.”

For the first time since the 0: 4 against Bayern at the beginning of 2020 and the subsequent Corona outbreak, Hertha is playing in front of a sold-out stadium (75,000 spectators) – and with a completely changed starting eleven compared to the 1: 2 in Leverkusen. New coach Felix Magath (68) brings five (!) new ones. Underneath a hammer!

Right-back Julian Eitschberger (18/never in the professional squad before) from Hertha’s A youth makes his Bundesliga debut on the left. Already the 35th Hertha player to play this season – the only high in the league!

Magath before the game on Sky: “I don’t know him either. He only trained with me twice. But he is greedy for the ball and brave. We need a player like that.” Sky expert Lothar Matthäus: “Typical Felix Magath!”

But it goes terribly wrong. Hardly any ball actions – and even before the 0:1 Eitschberger doesn’t look good: unchallenged Becker cross from the left. The ball sails past Hertha substitute goalkeeper Lotka (5th bankruptcy in the 5th game). Eitschberger cannot hold Haraguchi at the far post. And of all things, the ex-Hertha star (2014 to 2018), who never played a major role in Blau-Weiss, made the deserved 1-0 lead for Union (31st) with a diving header.

Bitter: Even with a header from Trimmel, Eitschberger cannot interfere. At halftime, Magath breaks off the experiment. BamS grade 5!

Eitschberger still turns pro. It’s already signed. His contract will take effect in the summer.

Shortly after the break then Hertha hope: Unions Baumgartl first cancels the offside and then, after Belfodil crosses, shoots the ball on his arm when trying to clear – and from there to 1: 1 into his own goal (49th).

But the tie doesn’t last long: Gießelmann’s cross finds Prömel in the middle, who has the ball in front of Kempf. The renewed Union lead (53rd) – 3:36 min. after the 1: 1. And already Hertha’s 15th (!) header goal this season. Becker counterattacked with a shot at the long corner (74th) for Union, Michel with left (85th) made the Derby humiliation perfect.

And the fans? Also showing her riotous face. At the beginning of the first half, the Hertha supporters (about 70 Bengalos and 5 Pyros) ignited and banged. At the beginning of the second half, the Unioners (150 Bengalos). It will be expensive for both clubs!

When the active fan scene returns, a frustration banner against financiers and the President hangs in the east stand of the Hertha fans: “Windhorst and Gegenbauer out!” A decision will be made at the general meeting in May.

A nice idea too: if you came early, you received a flag and a voucher for a free drink to avoid chaos at the entrance. As well as the 3:30 p.m. Bundesliga conference on the scoreboard.

And even alcohol was allowed in the stadium thanks to the good sector separation – even though it was a high-risk game. So the frustrated Hertha fans could at least drink their club’s poor performance.
