Bayer Leverkusen: Telephone call after a cruciate ligament rupture: Flick encourages Wirtz

The injury drama surrounding Leverkusen’s top star Florian Wirtz (18) in the 1-0 defeat in the derby against 1. FC Köln not only shocked his club, but also the national team.

The DFB announced Sunday evening that national coach Hansi Flick had called his national player.

“Florian Wirtz is one of the greatest talents that German football has produced in recent years,” says national coach Flick, “so we were all shocked when we found out about his cruciate ligament tear. I’ve already spoken to him on the phone and tried to give him courage.”

Flick is hoping for a speedy recovery from Wirtz, who made his debut under the new national coach last September and has since played four internationals: “He’s still young, he’ll come back at least as strong, I’m sure of that. He has our full support. We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed that the healing process is as optimal as possible.”

It’s not just the Bayer Leverkusen fans who are hoping for that.
